Beginning on March 4th and extending through March 6th, D SCALE, Dennis Duffy’s modern furniture store, will be hosting an exhibit of historically important Bonsai trees. According to Michael Levin, owner of Bonsai West, "these trees have never been shown in a gallery setting before." Bonsai West will exhibit Michael Levin's work spanning the past twenty years. The Bonsai West collection consists of some of the oldest and most beautiful bonsai trees outside of
Bonsai West has the most extensive collection of specimen Bonsai outside of Japan, featuring the work of American Bonsai artists such as Mr and Mrs Hatanaka, Mr Yamasaki, Roy Nagatoshi, Nick Lenz, Mr Ishii, Guy Guidry, Colin Lewis, Jim Smith and Michael Levin - as well as trees styled by artists in Japan, Korea, and China. Bonsai West has become a destination for bonsai lovers from throughout the world.
Jacob Kulin
This show was produced and curated by artist and sculptor Jacob Kulin, who, using his own artistic talent
will be ‘”presenting the trees in an innovative manner, reformulating some of the more conventional standards of display.” Many of the pedestals and tables were designed and built specifically to suit a given bonsai, a unique means of exhibiting these living, sculptural forms. For this event, Jacob Kulin is highlighting the significance of proper presentation of the bonsai. Jacob has addressed the challenge of finding the proper balance between the bonsai, the pedestal/table on which it is placed, and the surrounding space it occupies. The goal of the show is to explore the true beauty and artistic aesthetic of the bonsai, including technical composition and presentation.
Jacob Kulin is the owner of Kulin Modern. He holds a graduate degree from Cranbrook Academy Art and began using his artistic talents in the making of jewelry, and in particular neck pieces. His fascination with repetition led to his current design direction which is the design and fabrication of wall-mounted sculpture in triptych format. The evolution of his sculpture has been in part influenced by a longstanding admiration for Scandinavian design from the 50's and 60's. His work is defined by clean, modern forms and the use of innovative materials. Currently, his works include a series of tables using metal, glass, and reclaimed hardwoods. These modern pieces maintain a sculptural quality and allow functional use. His work has been featured in numerous publications and on NECN’s New England Dream House.

A few weeks ago I attended a fashion week kick-off event
with Dennis; he is a gem and invites me to these things because he knows I
appreciate fashion. Having been part of Boston's design community for 10+ years
Dennis has no shortage of friendly faces to mingle with at these things. This
event, however, was different - there wasn't the usual circle he runs with from
Duffy Design Group and D SCALE - leaving us to talk to each other. This led to
a discussion about photography which I went to school for and Dennis recently
started shooting again. Where he finds the time, I have no idea…but the thing I
thought was cool is that here is an interior designer at an exclusive Fashion
Week event talking about photography. Naturally attracted to beauty and curious
by nature - Dennis appreciates all facets of design and incorporates them into
his life and ultimately his work. See above where I’ve posted a sampling of
some of his work from our trip to Urbino, Italy this July.

We are holding a reception at our showroom to welcome local artist, Carrie Gustafson and present her work. Carrie’s joyful aesthetic is a quest for lightness and luminosity radiating through her colorful, bold modernist artglass . Her intricate patterns are inspired by kimono designs, nature and baskets. Not quite ready to give into the machine age, Carrie’s patterns are created by overlaying stencils and cutting each piece out by hand. Artists and art enthusiasts alike can appreciate her tedious process which only adds merit and intrigue to her already amazingly beautiful pieces.
Dennis Duffy and our team at D SCALE are very excited about this relationship and feel Carrie’s work perfectly complements our modern and vintage furnishings and accessories. Her work has been shown in galleries and shows across the country and has been recognized in several publications internationally. D SCALE is happy to represent Carrie exclusively in the Boston area and hope that you will join us tonight to meet the artist while enjoying light refreshments.
If you cannot make it to the reception, please be sure to stop by this weekend during South End Open Studios to view Carrie's work which will remain on display through Sunday September 21st

Amanda Brisbane,
Artists featured at D SCALE include one of the UK’s foremost contemporary glass

Her pieces offer the subtlety of smooth fire-polished glass on the inner surface and a contrasting coarser texture on the underside. D SCALE offers significant pieces from Amanda Brisbane’s Frozen Water and Leaf Collections.
D SCALE also offers ceramic pods, bottles, and teardrops by UK artist Sophie Cook. Sophie Cook’s work is a permanent feature in museum collections ranging from the Geoffrye Museum in London to the Denver Art Museum’s Euro Design Exhibition. Celebrities that have bought her work include Georgio Armani, Elton John and Jennifer Anniston.
